For Researchers

How Can TTBE Help Me?

Negotiation of Research Contracts

TTBE works with researchers and their government or industrial research partners to negotiate and finalize research contracts, budgets and plans. Once contracts are in place, TTBE will act as a liaison to Financial Services to establish a new research account for the project and establish invoicing and payment schedules with the sponsor.

Other Research Support Agreements

In addition to research contracts, TTBE will assist researchers and external partners to gain access to material as well as confidential information through the establishment of research support agreements, including Material Transfer and Non-Disclosure Agreements.

Development of New Collaborative Research Opportunities

TTBE monitors government and other external research agencies for new opportunities for collaborative research. Many agencies, including granting councils, centres of excellence programs and other “4th pillar” organizations, bring together university researchers with government and industry support. TTBE works with researchers and external research sponsors to create new research partnerships for fundamental research and/or technology development. TTBE assists researchers in working with external research partners to support innovation and research excellence.

Disclosure, Evaluation and Protection of Research Discoveries

TTBE works with researchers to document new research discoveries, inventions and technologies. TTBE then evaluates these innovations for patentability and commercial potential. Whenever appropriate, TTBE manages the protection of intellectual property (including patent filing) and the processes that may lead to commercialization. TTBE will work with the researcher to obtain external funding for proof-of-principle and/or further development of the discovery.

Transfer of Research Discoveries to Partners

TTBE seeks new development opportunities for research discoveries through several mechanisms, including strategic collaborative research partnerships (such as industrial research chairs), technology development partnerships (including proof-of-principle funding) and technology licensing and commercialization.

Development of Commercialization Opportunities for Research Discoveries

TTBE will assist researchers to develop a commercialization strategy for their research discovery. Several options are available – from licensing to the creation of a start-up company based on the research discovery - depending on the stage of development of the discovery and the researcher’s interest in commercialization. TTBE will provide assistance and/or liaison with business planning, management advisors, business development expertise and financing.
